As I sit waiting for the next bus, I see two girls, maybe 6 years old, skipping around their mom. As I watch, I reflect on my own mom, skipping around her with my sister while waiting in line. It's been many years since I was that young, and a lot has happened in those years. My sister and I have grown up, and gained new sisters (step-sisters, a half sister, and finally a sister-in-law). Now we are working on our own families. It was a simpler time then, but I wouldn't trade anything to be where I am now!
As He Coiled Arianna Stonewater (Slytherin)
As he coiled up the rope he felt the boat drift away from the dock. There was a gentle breeze pushing the boats while those inside sat back and relaxed. Damien looked down at the crystal clear water and saw his own face looking back at him. A small fish swam right under his boat and stopped right under the reflection of his mouth to eat some of the plants growing below. Damien moved his mouth and began laughing; it looked like he was eating the fish! The fish continued on and Damien laid back laughing as he drifted away.
The Mysterious Man Angelina Grubblyplank (Hufflepuff)
It was a warm day in Godric's Hollow, and Angie was on her way to book club. She was so excited, she didn't notice the old man walking next to her. She did stop halfway there to rest, and it was at that moment she noticed him. He was wearing a white trench coat, a silver and green scarf, and boots. He turned to face Angie, and disappeared on the spot. Angie was desperately trying to find a logical explanation to this strange phenomenon. No, she new there was something weird in Godric's Hollow, and that something was a ghost.
The Paper Sirius Fudge (Hufflepuff)
Sirius was called to the HoH's office. "You haven't finished six OWLs last year. What are your plans?"
"I am sorry, Professor. I've been busy hunting some trolls in the mountains. I will take those OWLs that I missed and hopefully get good grades to the subjects that matter for my NEWTs," Sirius answered.
"You have to get good grades in the subjects required for you to be an Obliviator. This is not you, Sirius."
"No, Professor. That paper does not reflect me. I am not that paper. I will never be just a paper." Sirius left the room, relieved.
Unexpected Angles Sirius Fudge (Hufflepuff)
Sometimes, it is better to look for things in your reflection. There is that one time I am in my broomstick. We passed a lake and I saw a snitch behind me. I would have not seen it for sure if it wasn't for the reflection. Of course, it was behind me. But with the reflection in the lake, I had seen it. Maybe if we get to look for things in some angles, in unexpected angles, we might find what we are looking for.
"Oh, the professor is coming," Sirius exclaimed as he saw his reflection in the window.
What Could Have Been Ariella McManus
He stared into the silvery liquid, normally stern countenance softening into a smile. Dour expression replaced by tender longing, as he reflected on how things could-have-been. His love smiled and he wiped a tear from his eye, heart filled with rapture at the memory.
The vision wavered, slashes of silver cutting into the face of his beloved. Some memories hurt too much to be treasured overlong. With a last look at her beautiful face, he replaced the cup on the shelf.
Professor Snape sighed and headed for the classroom, stern expression safely in place once more. His secret was safe.
Days of Future Past Ariella McManus
"Tell me what you see."
The gypsy smiled, giving the crystal ball a fond pat.
"Patience, young man"
"Tell me, NOW!"
Mumbling about insolent youth, she continued.
"The future has been foretold. I see reflected moments of great suffering, and even greater glory. You will lead an army, and the people shall speak your name in hushed tones of awe. Your power will be mighty, and your name will be immortal."
"I am but a messenger, Sir, a humble servant of the crystal"
He raised his wand.
Tom Riddle smiled. The future had begun.
Bus Stop Lavinia Rookwood
The bus was running late and she was bored. The sun hit the advertisement board just right, her reflection clear as day.
Checking that nobody was around, she began to make faces, sticking her tongue out, crossing eyes, and giggled as her reflection copied. She even stretched out her hand to touch the reflection, pretending she could touch it. She tilted her head left, calming down from her laughter.
Her reflection tilted it's head right. She gasped, heart beating faster as her reflection smiled on its own and pulled her towards it.
The bus drove past the empty bus stop.
A Warrior's End Lavinia Rookwood
The reflection was distorted, but that was to be expected. After all, swords are not mirrors. He had grown grey though, even a sword could show that. He had served long and proudly in the army and even his own son served at his side.
But all wars must end. He had told his king such and was exiled for it. All he was left with was the clothes he wore, one small pack, and his sword. And a final chance to say goodbye to his son.
"You deserved better."
The old man laid his sword on his son's grave.
Do You Fear Failure? Elizabeth Mayes
Robert Schuller, a motivational speaker, author, and pastor, once said, “What would you attempt to do if you knew you would not fail?” On so many occasions we hold ourselves back from being able to accomplish amazing things because we fear failure. How many wonderful things would the human race have accomplished by now if we only trusted in ourselves and accepted that failure was inevitable in life? I want to challenge everyone to reflect on their actions. Are you choosing not to attempt something because you fear you will fail? Risk that failure and you may accomplish something amazing.
The Start of a New Adventure Elizabeth Mayes
As a muggleborn I never expected that someday I would be studying magic inside of a massive castle. If I could produce a patronus, I’m not sure if my happiest memory would be receiving my letter or getting that first glance of the castle from the lake. Already I’ve made friends and obtained so many wonderful memories. I’ve grown more confident in interacting with new people; I’ve laughed and smiled more. If in less than a month Hogwarts can have such a profound impact on me than what will the next seven years hold? I can’t wait to find out!
Hope they came out okay. These are my first attempts at writing drabbles and my this is my first time writing for a paper.
We See Colour Meredith Malkins (Hufflepuff)
We see colour when molecules absorb certain wavelengths of visible light, but reflect others. Leaves are green because chlorophyll - a substance found in chloroplasts, crucial to photosynthesis - reflects green light, but absorbs the rest. White is the result of reflecting all the colours, while substances that are black reflect nothing. So colour, for all it's beauty and variety, is just reflected wavelengths of light, unwanted by molecules. Reflection is simply bouncing back, yet we use it as a synonym for contemplation. But if we are reflecting, surely we reject the thoughts that we think, no matter how serious or interesting?
Point of View Reggy Faraday (Hufflepuff)
The house looked alien like this. Small hands gripped the purple plastic portal, held it as level as possible at the girl’s waist. She looked down into her mother’s hand mirror, guide to an upside-down world, and walked. No easy task. Popcorn texture seemed like footsteps from another explorer, gone before her. Had they met with tragedy? The world looked cold and barren from this angle, plaster monotony broken up by occasional air vents. She’s have to be careful to step over the door frames, and watch out for the big drop down (up?) to the high foyer ceiling.
Father Wind Aluna Lilah
Father Wind chuckled as young Hope chased the bubbles of life and ideals.
“Slow down!” giggled Hope.
Hope saw the reflection of fear in one bubble. POP! No more fear in the world.
She did the same with the hate, sadness, and despair.
Hope noticed a tingling in her limbs. Wondering what was happening, she looked at her reflection in the nearby puddle. Her figure was fuzzy. “Father, help!”
“My dear, hope can not exist without ideas like fear, hate, sadness, and despair. The world lives in a balance, not to be messed with.” Father Wind told her.
The Circle of Life Ashley Margaret
One of my favorite scenes of The Lion King is when Rafiki leads Simba to a small pool of water and tells Simba to look. At first glance, all Simba sees is his own reflection. However, when Rafiki tells him to look harder, Simba sees the reflection of his father, Musfasa. Rafiki explains that this is because “he lives in you.” Because of this moment, Simba is reminded of who is he and who he must become. As a result of remembering who he is, Simba heads back to Pride Rock to take his place as the one true king.
The Mirror Ashley Margaret
So many people look in the mirror and are not content with the image that is reflected back at them. They think they are too fat or too skinny. They don’t like their hair, their nose, their eyes. They feel like they should look a certain way simply because society tells them that that image is “pretty.” However, everyone is beautiful in one way or another. When people look at their reflection they should be happy with what they see. They should look at themselves and think they are beautiful, regardless of the fact that others might tell them otherwise.
Funhouse Mirrors Aurelia Chantelier
Funhouse mirrors are a common attraction at carnivals. They can distort the reflection of a person, making parts of them seem either taller or shorter. This occurs because different areas of the mirror are curved in different ways. Convex mirrors curve outward and make a person look shorter, while concave mirrors curve inward and make a person look taller. This happens because the normal, or the line perpendicular to the surface of the mirror, is in a different position when the mirror is curved, which changes the angle at which light is reflected back to the eyes, causing the distortion.
Reflectionless Aurelia Chantelier
It was a silly thing to miss, perhaps, but ever since the day of her death, Claudia had missed being able to see her reflection most of all. This was particularly inconvenient in the mornings, when she woke up knowing for sure that she looked a fright. These days she couldn’t rely on the mirror in her room to tell her otherwise, she had to feel her hair to make sure it was neat after she combed it, and applying makeup was largely guesswork. Sometimes she suspected that the makeup didn’t even go on, and those times were the worst.
Mirror Image Twins Polaris Black
Mirror image twins are twins who, when facing each other, appear as matching reflections. About 25 percent of all identical twins are mirror image twins and it is thought that this type of twinning occurs because the fertilized egg splits later than usual. DNA testing cannot distinguish between them; they have the same sex, blood type, and physical features but opposite asymmetric features. If one is right handed the other is left handed. If one has a freckle on the left check the other has a freckle on the right check. In more extreme cases, the twins have mirrored internal organs.
How To Remove An Echo Polaris Black
An echo is caused by the reflection of sound waves from a surface back to the listener. If echoing is a problem in a room, you will need to absorb and diffuse the reflections from the ceiling. Any fabric or material with some air will help absorb the frequencies and stop them from reflecting back. And acoustical tile, made from sound-absorbing material, can also be applied to ceilings or walls. Diffusers are an excellent alternative or complement to sound absorption because they do not remove sound energy but rather spread the reflections around the room and make them less powerful.
