Sky Alton Writer, Gryffindor French author Jules Verne is often (some would say wrongly) classified as a pulp science Fiction, fantasy or even children’s writer. The Hollywood Adaptations and abridged versions of his stories have perpetuated this view of him as a popular, commercial author, rather than a great literary figure. However, his novels predate both
of the former genre terms and his books in non-english speaking countries are actually regarded as sophisticated literary fiction. They are more properly ‘adventure stories’ and when they were written, were actually noted for their scrupulous research and adherence to scientific beliefs of the time. This got me wondering how other authors have gone above and beyond for their craft and ideals. Virginia Wolfe wrote for hours standing up, John Steinbeck developed crippling callouses due to his habit of writing with hexagonal pencils and Nathaniel Hawthorne managed to turned several months of muck spreading, hey cutting and blisters into a novel. During that time, I met a few HOLers, one for the first time, and did some exploration when I went back south to where I normally stay when I head back to Illinois. Given the fact that we were doing a May Flowers activity in the Sett, I decided to head over to St. Louis and visit the botanical gardens there.
